Pretty Maids - live in Bochum

Monday nights aren't the best for concerts and even the Danish dynamite couldn't get the place crowded. A shame as their last album Pandemonium was really strong and live the Danish always been killer.
Anyway, opening act tonight - as last Saturday in Andernach - was Ginger Red. The band was founded in 2009 by singer Olli Möger (ex-Black Arrow) and guitarist Tom Weise (ex-Jake Porn) to play a mix of dirty heavy rock and glam metal. Their debut album Hard As A Rock will be release at the end of the month via STF-Records. At 8 PM the guys entered the stage and kicked off with Odins Hall, an up-tempo rocker which reminds me off some 80's tune... The chorus is made to sing along, but as the album isn't out yet, it's another unknown tune to the attending. During their limited stage time they played 7 songs plus an intro and so about 2/3 of the debut album. Unfortunately the interview with Pretty Maids got delayed and so it took place during the show of Ginger Red. At the end of their second song it was time to leave for the interview... So far I can say that Ginger Red delivered a solid performance, even if they have to work on their stage acting, but I guess that will improve with every show they play. Singer Olli tried to cheer up the people next to the stage and even if they didn't get raving reactions, they made people tap their feet and nod their heads with the beat.
When we returned from the interview the band was closing their set with Evil.
During the break people were getting closer to the stage and impatiently waited for Pretty Maids to enter the stage. Ronny Atkins and his mates kicked off with the title track of their latest album Pandemonium. Obviously not everybody was familiar with the new album, but as they had some more new tunes on the set list this should change. With I.N.V.U. they continued. Right from the start singer Ronnie Atkins was always in motion and obviously in good shape, his voice was strong and powerful. Bassist Hal Patino just joined them this year, but he isn't a nobody and he played countless shows, used every inch of the stage while guitarist Ken Hammer his counterpart. Mr. Hammer demonstrated his skills during the set and he was obviously happy to be on stage. How are you, Bochum? We came here to have a good time, We Came To Rock!" Ronnie Atkins announced - and hell broke loose. After this classic they presented the title track of their 2006 album Wake Up To The Real World. Afterwards Ken Hammer had to tune his guitar, and Ronnie were joking about him, but then they traveled back in time... "25 years ago we had an album called Red Hot & Heavy. One song was called Waiting For The Time!" Time for another classic - Savage Heart. At the beginning only keyboard and vocals, later the rest joined in. Especially the opening part was incredible thanks to Morten Sandager's keyboard play and Atkins emotional vocals. Then they headed into It Comes At Night, another songs from Pandemonium. "Back to the 80's! To our 25th century... What did I say? 25th anniversary album, back to Red Hot & Heavy." Queen Of Dreams should lead over to a short drum solo, Cielo Drive followed. And with the first notes of Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi (Carmina Burana) fans knew it was time for Back To Back! The place was on fire! It seemed that everybody was singing along loudly - and it sounded like the place was packed! After Rodeo Ronnie Atkins introduced the band, as the got closer to the end of the show a smiling Ken Hammer handed a beer to a fan in the first row, then a bottle of water to another while playing the Thin Lizzy cover Please Don't Leave Me. "Thank you so much! Everything comes to an end, but before we check out we want to play one more song..." Mr. Atkins announced and before he could name the track everybody knew it was Love Games with the first notes played. Too soon it was over and the band left the stage. But no show without Future World! And so they came back for their smash hit. For some reason Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer got into a laughing fit and Atkins could hardly continued singing, but as the fans were singing it didn't really matter. Bassist Hal Patino kicked away the micro stand when walking over to join Ken Hammer. And before they ended their set with Red, Hot & Heavy, they played Little Drops Of Heaven. At Red, Hot & Heavy Ken and the guys embedded a short citation of Smoke On The Water before continuing with their classic.
The fans who came to see the Danish dynamite won't regret it, as usual the band delivered an energetic performance and they still enjoy playing live a lot, so I hope that next time around more fans will come to see them on stage! You really missed something, if you haven't been at one of their shows!

Before the show we - Gisela and I - had the chance to talk to singer Olli and guitarist tom. The interview is in German, but I wanted to give you the chance to listen to the conversation. Click here to listen to the interview!

- Pretty Maids - November 15th 2008 - Bochum (D), Matrix

It's been years since Pretty Maids toured and so people were excited to see them. The opening band was The Roxx, but I didn't really see them, coz I met a friend from my Hamburg days and so we were hanging out at the bar talking.
Pretty Maids: Ronnie Atkins live in Bochum At 9:30 it was time for Pretty Maids! During the intro the band walked on stage and kicked off with Sin-Decade! Right from the start the fans were partying! It was obvious that the guys were in a splendid mood. The new members, drummer Allan Tschicaja and keyboarder Morten Sandager (Mercenary), fit in well and it seemed like they were playing together for many years. When they played the first notes of Lethal Hero the crowd went crazy. The Danish hadn't played this song for ages! Ken Hammer was grinning like a Cheshire cat watching the crowd going wild. Then it was time for a track from their latest album, they head into the title track Wake Up To The Real World. Another short trip back in time - We Came To Rock - and back to The Real World. The Danish Dynamite eased up a bit and presented a ballad with Another Shot Of Love. Afterwards Ronnie Atkins asked "Are you still there?" and continued "Sounds like you're having a good time! Want some heavy stuff?" and the fans responded loudly. With Virtual Reality and Destination Paradise they sped up again. While Ken Hammer was trying to entertain the fans in front of him, it seemed as bassist Kenn Jackson was partly a bit bored - perhaps he didn't find the right target to flirt with at his side of the stage?! Especially as they slowed down for Walk Away. And after the song everybody walked away, off stage... Only keyboarder Morten and Ronnie Atkins stayed for Savage Heart, another highlight. Towards the end of the song the others reappeared to head into Yellow Rain! The house was on fire! And they kept firing! Back To Back - and a mosh pit opened up! With Rodeo they played another track from Future World and become obvious that these more then 20 year old songs were what the people wanted to hear. After the song Ronnie Atkins introduced the band, the last in line was guitarist Ken Hammer. Someone shouted "Who's that singer?" And Ken Hammer answered "I don't know, he's following us for 27 years now!" Pretty Maids: Ronnie Atkins live in Bochum And started laughing about his own joke, while Ronnie poked him to go on and so he finally introduced Ronnie Atkins, but that's just part of the routines. Every Pretty Maids fan knows his name! "Some girls here?" Ken Hammer asked, but didn't get a satisfying answer. "Well, we play this ballad anyway!" and they continued with Please Don't Leave Me, followed by Love Games. With Love Games they had to come to an end... And as they announced this it seemed that they would have liked to continue... And the fans seemed too wonder, coz time is flying if you have fun. When the band left after Love Games the fans shouted for more - and it didn't take long til the Danish rocker were back for two more songs. And they didn't disappoint their fans and so they played Future World and Red, Hot And Heavy! Again the mosh pit opened up and fans were turning loose. As from the beginning of the show fans were singing a long and someone shouted a couple of times between the songs for Shelly The Maid - but that demand went unheard. But it was great to see them again on stage and they played some gems, even I everyone would have named some songs (s)he missed. They promised to be back soon and after seeing them in such a splendid mood, it looks like we don't have to wait for a couple of years until they hit the road again! Great show, just way too short!

Pretty Maids & Royal Hunt
- April, 13th 2002 - Offenbach (D), Hafenbahn -

The first week on the road is almost over and the tour trail arrived at Offenbach. Tonight the Danish package stopped at the Hafenbahn, it'll be their last time here! The Hafenbahn will be pulled down this summer....
A lot of fans made their way to the Hafenbahn and when Royal Hunt entered the stage the venue was almost packed. Again the Danish-American quintet started with The Mission. The stage isn't very big, but big enough to let bassist Steen Mogensen and guitarist Jakob Kjaer switch places. Only singer John West seems to be limited... Especially during the instrumental parts he seemed to miss space to act... So, more joking around with his band mates. A trip through history was what Royal Hunt did during their set. Surrender was a track many probably never heard live..... Usually John West changed his outfit for River Of Pain to the red Indian chief, but due to the limited space (almost impossible to leave the stage without bring down the drums!), he decided not to change his outfit. Two other tracks which presented the bands past are Running Wild and Last Good-Bye. And too soon it was time for the last track Total Recall. Too many songs which could have been played, but not enough time! A great show, musically a decent one and even the fun factor was high. But to confess, not as good as the show they played in Verviers on their own!
Now everybody was waiting for the Danish dynamite - Pretty Maids! Opening their set with Playing God from their latest release Planet Panic. And during the first song the fans recognized a familiar face behind the keyboards and wondered! On keyboards tonight Royal Hunt's André Andersen who will play keyboard for the rest of the tour for Pretty Maids. What happened? Ronnie Atkins explained that their keyboarder had to leave to Denmark, because of personal reasons. Luckily André Andersen jumped in and so the tour could be continued! For sure there were little mistakes here and there, but it was the first time for this collaboration!
Songs like Running Out, Rodeo, Scream presented the past and were mixed with new tracks like Face Of My Enemy which was a little more straight life and Natural High a ballad, both from the new output. After the semi-ballad Wouldn't Miss You from Carpe Diem it was time for drummer Michael Fast to show his abilities. The drum solo kind split the set into 2 parts and the 2nd part started with Virtual Brutality, the fast album opener. Then another travel back in time with Eye Of The Storm, We Came To Rock and Shelly The Maid! The fans went crazy! This was what they wanted to hear! Even if Ronnie Atkins and guitarist Ken Hammer did one great album after another, the classics are what the fans want! To finish the set the they played the Thin Lizzy cover Please Don't Leave Me, then they had to change the set list due to technical problems! Ken Hammer's guitar made problems and so the they had to improvise! For the fans it was something special, when they did an acoustic version of Savage Heart while the crew tried to solve the problem. Finally the guitar was back and to they finished with their classic Back To Back !
The fan shouted for more, not willing to let the band leave without playing some more! And so the quintet returned with Future World, Live Until It Hurts, the Deep Purple classic Black Night which wasn't planned and at least Red, Hot And Heavy!
A bonfire of their classics and some new hot tunes satisfied the fans and I guess that not one of the fans regret to came to see the show! Well done! And thanks to André who kinda saved the last shows!

Pretty Maids & Royal Hunt
- April, 9th 2002 - Bochum (D), Zeche -

A Danish night in Bochum! Yes, tonight it was time for Danish dynamite! First Royal Hunt entered the stage with The Mission. For most of the fans it was the first time that they saw Royal Hunt live with John West. After the release of Fear in fall 1999 they just played a few festivals, a planned tour never took place and so John West had to proof it live! No doubt that the band of keyboarder André Andersen traveled through the history of the band. Songs like Wasted Time, Day In Day Out and River Of Pain sounded amazing! The band offered a great show, a lot fun and convinced the fans of Pretty Maids easily! With Lies they had only one track from West's debut Fear. Personally I wished they would have played more songs from the latest releases, but on the other hand this kind of best of set worked out very well! Tonight the Danish quintet made new friends and hopefully we'll see them again soon!
After a break the band of Ronnie Atkins and Ken Hammer entered the stage and the fans went crazy! The venue was not sold out, but ca. 700 fans found their way to Bochum and were shouting, singing and rocking from the first second! And the crowd gave 150% after Ronnie Atkins told them that tonight's show was recorded for a live album! And so they played quite a few tracks which haven't been played in years! It was cool to hear tracks like Rodeo and Eye Of The Storm which are both from their 1987 release Future World, but sure they played a lot of newer stuff, coz on the Scream tour they record and released afterwards Scream Live and so the priority was to play new songs. A stable line-up as Pretty Maids has, helps a band be a unit live and they are one of the best live acts these days in heavy metal! It's always a pleasure to see them live, especially singer Ronnie Atkins has a powerful voice, but can show his emotional side while singing the ballads! New highlights from Planet Panic, their latest release are He How Never Lives, Virtual Brutality and Wouldn't Miss You from Carpe Diem! There are a few classics Pretty Maids have to play like: Back To Back, Future World, We Came To Rock and the Thin Lizzy cover Please Don't Leave Me!
Even if Ronnie & co. never made it big, but have a decent and loyal following. They can be proud of what they are doing! Shame on you, if you had the chance to see them live, but didn't use it! It's good to know that they will be at Wacken this year! I'll be there to see them! Hope you too!

Pretty Maids & Crystal Ball
- February, 5th 2001 - Bochum (D), Zeche -

On a Monday night the Zeche Bochum was filled with metal fans who came to see the Danish.
Opening act on this tour were Crystal Ball I can't say much about their set, coz I don't know their albums... The quintet fit well to Pretty Maids, they played melodic metal as well. As far as I know the Swiss rockers have released two albums. The quintet tried to make the people move.... And partly they succeeded. The boys remind me a little bit of Victory... A decent show.
After a break Ronnie Atkins and his mates entered the stage and opened their set with Sin-Decade. At the beginning of the set the sound wasn't very good, a few songs later they had a better sound, but still... Rock The House was their motto of the night, even if Ronnie Atkins obviously was battling a cold which effected his singing. During the first half of the 90 min. set (incl. encores) I missed some stage acting for Ken Hammer and Kenn Jackson. They were joking around which partly effects Kenn Jackson's playing, especially during the old tracks. It was a decent show, but I have seen better ones of the Danish. On the other hand it was fantastic to hear the old stuff! This was more a best-of-set than one to promote the current album. The set list incl. We Came To Rock, Rodeo, Yellow Rain, Cold Killer and some more classics. After about 40 min. the band gave drummer Michael Fast the possibility to show his talent in a drum solo. Afterwards Ronnie Atkins entered the stage to start Savage Heart in a just keyboard-based version. Due to this keyboard version Ronnie changed the vocal lines partly... Also during the other songs he made slightly changes depending on his cold. With the Thin Lizzy classic Please Don't Leave Me they started in the last 3rd of their set. This was the time when Ken Hammer and Kenn Jackson started to move on stage. With Tortured Spirit (2nd song of the set) and Wouldn't Miss You they presented just 2 new tracks... I expected to hear Carpe Diem and hoped to hear Until It Dies ... Perhaps next time...
After a short break the band returned for the encore which been opened by Future World. To soon the show was over, probably caused by the long overnight ride to Switzerland... Hey guys, come back soon and present a little more of the new stuff!
