IV
(Brownsville Records - 2010)
|
Swiss rockers Pure Inc. are back with their 4th album which is simply called IV. Again they combine Zeppelin-esque rock with modern elements and a dash grunge. So the opener Once Upon A Time indicates that not much changed since Parasites & Worms. A heavy groove and hard riffs build the powerful platform for Gianni Pontillo's voice. At Blood Runs Black they add samples from news, the song shows them more modern sounding... A bit like early Alter Bridge. Then they slow down and offer a doom-ish monster called Fading To Grey, a break and everything is different - they sound fragile -, back to the slow groove part. My Riverbed is a heavy tune with expressive vocals, a powerful balladesque track. It's prominent the bass line by Hoffi and Sandro's slightly psychedelic guitar play which makes in combination with Gianni's vocals this song special. At Diary Of A Suicidal Man they take you onto a sonic roller coaster ride! A heavy groove leads you into the album, but later the song explodes and has a metalcore-ish edge. With Number 7 they show once more their love for Alice In Chains - in the Pure Inc. way. One of my favorites is To The Rhythm, it hooked me up immediately. It's also a good song to check out Pure Inc. as it has the trademarks of their sound, even if you'll find some additional sound elements at one or the other song. The pushing boundaries at Sexells, a song with a funky edge and saxophone! |
Parasites And Worms
(Dockyard 1 - 2008)
|
This is the 3rd album of Swiss rockers Pure Inc. and if I wouldn't know them already the cover of Parasites and Worms wouldn't make me pick up the album. They describe their sound as 'use 10 grams of Led Zepplin, 20 grams of Alice In Chains, 30 grams of Black Label Society and 40 grams of Soundgarden, well-shaken and mixed and there goes the explosion called Pure Inc.!' Usually this kind of descriptions isn't describing bands who are really blowing you away, but in this case its true! Just listen to the opening tune The End and let the four-some proof that this is what they are. And The End is just the beginning of an album full of heavy rock songs with crunchy guitar riffs and great vocals. In case The End couldn't win you over, check out Evenmore or Dead Calling. Singer Gianni Pontillo with his dark, slightly raspy voice is definitely a strong point for Pure Inc. as he can add power and express emotions as well. But the other guys in the band don't need to hide their lights under the bushel! During a slow passage of Serenade Of Aggression they show a more mellow side for a moment, just to explode again into a heavy rocker. Carrie's Alone is starting slowly with focus on Gianni's vocals who sounds vulnerable... The others step back for a moment, but then they rock again! And it's partly this combination of soft sounds and heavy guitar riffs, the contrast of fragile emotional words and screaming in anger... despair. On this album they manage to show their live power and I really hope they can tour with this album! It would be great to see these rockers live! |

Even if there ain't many Swiss bands known, they are usually very good. This Basel-based band offers powerful hard / heavy rock and has similarities to early Gotthard, China and Shakra. The quartet recorded their album in 2003 with producer Tommy Vetterli (ex-Coroner). The mixing was done by Mika Jussila who is known for his work with Stratovarius, Nightwish and Edguy. In 2004 they got a deal with AFM Records. And now their debut album is in the stores. They already played some shows with MSG and Gotthard in Switzerland. The first song on their self-titled debut is called Fear In My Eyes, here they show that they can combine heavy guitar riffing and melodies. The raspy voice of Gianni Pontillo remind me a bit of Ted Bullet (ex-Thunderhead, Sonofabitch)... A kind of more powerful version of John Waite (Bad English)... While Fear In My Eyes is a straight rocker, Genuis is taking back the power a little. With modern sound effects they make this one sound up-to-date - often this kind of music sounds backdated... A catchy refrain is added. Perhaps the perfect song to check out the Swiss rockers... Or listen to Piece Of Mind which shows the balladesque side of the band. But they are rockers and so the majority of the songs are guitar riffing-based rockers. With Promise they recorded an acoustic ballad, just guitar and vocals. This one remind me of something, but I can't get a grip on it.... Pontillo's vocals fit to the song, but to make it something special there is something missing.... The certain something which adds the magic. As if they want to remind the listener that they are rockers, they present the heaviest song of the album next - T.O.T. |
