Beneath The Northern Lights

Beneath The Northern Lights
(self-released - 2010)

The Spanish band Pimeä Metsä was founded in December 2006 in Madrid. The Madrileños are fans of Nordic folk / Viking metal and so they chose a Finnish name which also indicates the style. First they need to face some line-up changes, but since 2009 they have a stable line-up and so they present their first EP Beneath The Northern Lights. The EP is a free download, a link you can find at their MySpace.
Musically they are following the path of e.g. Korpiklaani and Finntroll. At Ragnarök some blackish sounds and deep growls been added. The guitar solo at Ragnarök isn't bad, but doesn't really fit. At Valloituksen Hymnia they are more aggressive, but then they surprise you with a balladesque passage which shows their folk-ish side. At Jään Sankareita singer Angel reminded me for a moment of Peavy Wagner, but he offers everything from clean vocals to growls. Their last track Olut is more a traditional heavy metal tune spiced up with folk elements. As it's a free download give them a chance, if you are into this genre. Okay, they have to work on some things, so there are parts which should be overdone. And the sound quality could be better, but it isn't a professional recording!
