Realise

Realise
(self-released - 2010)

London-based trio Past The Fall is back with Realise. And I first realize that Behind The Lies is more straight forward, soon Will Wright add some growls, the song develops fast. And it seems that Will Wright worked on his vocals, coz the raspy vocals and the growls are differ more. With Paydirt they offer a riff-based track with breaks, a slow, atmospheric passage and show that they have more to offer then brutal riffs. But they return to the opening theme later. The last one - Injustice - combines thrashy riffs with death metal elements, but you also get a melodic guitar solo from Tom Cope. Actually at this one the trio show different facets and manage to melt together their influences into one.
It's obvious that Past The Fall worked on the song writing, they are more to the point now. They really improved which probably don't come across in the rating... This is a very good 8, close to 9... It will be interesting to see what they have in store for us next time!

Execute
(self-released - 2009)

Past The Fall is a new British thrash outfit founded in summer 2009 in London. Now guitarist Tom Cope, drummer Marco Antonio and singer / bassist Will Wright present a 3-track demo called Execute.
Musically they are influenced by thrash, but add some other sound elements. The opener Only The Strong Survive is offering fast riffing, but also doomy passages. Somehow the raspy vocals fit and remind me of some death metal stuff. But at the same time the vocals will be what most people will criticize... The following Beyond Existense begins slow, but then they speed up a bit... They try to keep the listeners attention with twists and turns, but it didn't work out. At least Beyond Existense is too long, if the song would be shortened, it would work... Some nice ideas, but they get lost on the way. Its like they have something in mind, but can't bring it to life... The last one is Through Broken Skies, an instrumental where Tom's guitar partly takes over what would be the vocal line. And I can imagine that this song grows with a good singer adding his skills. A riff-based tune with tempi changes which shows that they have more too offer. This one they keep short and is works way better.
In my opinion the reason to do this demo is to get feedback and to improve. Guitarist Tom Cope is doing well and the rhythmic basis is quite okay. But they have to work on the song writing, sometimes they seem to get lost... And with a decent singer they will reach more people... But it's too early to say, if Past The Fall have a real chance or will soon disappear. I think the band needs time to develop and to improve their song writing skills.
