I See Red

I See Red
(Candlelight Records - 2009)

Claustrofobia are from Leme, a satellite city of Sao Paulo, and were founded back in the mid-90's. In 2000 they released their self-titled debut album and with I See Red they have their 4th album ready to thrash the metal world. The Brazilians offer thrash metal attacks with some hardcore influences and growls. The opener Discharge gives you an idea about Claustrofobia who not just fire riff attacks, they also offer some melodic elements and technical passages. When you're listening to War Stomp you'll understand why this band got the chance to share stages with Sepultura, Krisiun, Soulfly, Vader, Napalm Death among others. At Minefield they slow down for awhile, but the intensity of the music is almost like a threat! You can feel the threat like being on a minefield yourself. When they kick off Alarm slowly, it's a surprise, but then they pick up speed and go full force. Soon they are 'back on track'. Staccato riffing leads into Natural Terrorism, not as fast as the others, but quite heavy. Again they surprise with some unusual guitar leads. The title track is a fast, brutal thrasher! Nëia will shock some thrash fans as it's a kind of jazzy improvisation! The track is about 3 minutes and I guess most will push the skip button... Back to thrash! Track 14 of the promo is untitled, but should be a cover of Ultraje a Rigor which is called Fihla Da Puta... As I don't know that song, its speculation. And at the end of the album you get Sepultura's Beneath The Remains. Well done!
To check out the Brazilian thrashers I recommend: I See Red, Minefield, Natural Terrorism and Tiro de Meta.

I See Red

I See Red
(Candlelight Records - 2009)

The boys from Brazil play hyperfast thrash / death metal. Bands which offer tons of riffs and a felt million speed changes in a 3 to 4 minute long track aren't always my cup of tea, but what Claustrofobia present on I See Red is impressive. Technically on a high level the Brazilians storm off and their drummer seems to be inhuman! With supersonic speed the Brazilians fire blast beats, fat grooves and thrash attacks at the listener. Almost no melodies, just brutal power. Like a hurricane Claustrofobia come over you, steam roll everything which is in their way. To get an idea about their sound, imagine Sepultura on speed with some Krisium, a dash of Morbid Angel and a splash Dying Fetus. Technical brutality! They honor the mighty Sepultura with a fast version of Beneath The Remains while the hidden track Filha Da Puta is the most melodic song, but also shows some punk attitude. I'm totally floored by the musical 'chaos' these guys present and hope they will make it. Everybody who is into technical, brutal sounds should dig I See Red. Thank you Brazil for all your brutal bands!
