Utter Darkness

Utter Darkness
(self-released - 2009)

In 2005 started as Xerxes, the project became Xerxes The Dark and now XTD [Xerxes The Dark]. This single offers a 7+ minute long track with sounds which remind me of some movie soundtrack. If you expect some 'real' music, you might be disappointed, but the ambient sounds are interesting for people who like Tangerine Dream - especially the pink years. It's impossible to go into detail, so visit the website, download the track and find out!
Last time, Nought single, I complained that the songs was too long. Well, 30+ minutes was too much. This time it works way better as the song is about 7:30 minutes. Again most interesting for fans of ambient, dark sounds - and science-fiction fans who love soundtracks.

Nought

Nought
(Amduscias Records - 2008)

The band project Xerxes is named after the great Persian king and was started back in 2005 in the country where the palace of Xerxes can be found - in Iran.
Nought is a kind of appetizer for the coming album AZOIX: The Kingdom of all the Dark Ambient Moments. And with about 34 minutes this single offers a lot, I remember full-length albums which weren't much longer... But the song takes several minutes to kick off, the beginning is some kind of humming noise, then Xerxes adds a new sound - and again it takes time to develop. A bit too long in my opinion. But due to the time the humming noise lasts it becomes somehow threatening... Frightening. It seems that nothing happens, coz this is lasting for minutes - and so you need to be patent. Later some electronic sounds join in and it becomes an ambient tune with electro sounds which make me think of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream....
Well, I like Tangerine Dream, but this track is too long - or too monotonous. The idea isn't bad and would work well as an interlude. Or as the soundtrack for some science fiction movie. But if you want to listen to music, this isn't very entertaining. And with about 34 minutes it's tiring. I just hope that the coming album has more too offer, even if this track can be found on the full-length as well.
