Bloody Voodoo Night

Bloody Voodoo Night
(Black Arrow - 2000)

It ain't easy to write an objective review when being involved in the band in the past. But okay, I have to find a way...
Did anybody expect that the guys from Bremen will change their musical style on their 5th album Bloody Voodoo Night? Nobody? Right! Why should they?!?! Okay, there have been line-up changes, but the band of Sönke Lau is sticking to their roots. Even if the vocals are vary, they are still playing powerful melodic true metal. Still the music is dominated by the powerful and pregnant vocals of Mr. Lau. The Germans are playing about 45 minutes in their typical, straight ahead way. Starting with the powerful and catchy opener Runaway to the guitar-driven Pain to the neck breaker Master Of Disguise which has a great refrain the album Bloody Voodoo Night is a great album. The weak point of the album is the Kiss homage Party Tonight which they better didn't put on the disc. Also the filler X.T.C..... Chief-editor Götz Kühnemund of Germany's leading metal magazine Rock Hard has the theory that Unrest used a drum computer... Well, if they did or not, just the band can tell. If they did, then this is the second slip of Unrest, remember the so-called live album. If not, then they have a really, really tight drummer.... If the band get another chance for a tour - like the one with W.A.S.P. - then this should be a step ahead for the guys!

Finally another album of Unrest! The songs sound old-fashioned, but the production is very powerful and it's fun to listen to this album. Musically they are close to Accept and Grave Digger and the Bremen-based band is firing great riffing at the listener. Shouter Sönke Lau is doing a good job with his powerful voice. Listen to songs like Lay Down And Lie, I Hate You and By The Light Of The Moon, these songs will make you bang! Simple, but heavy and definitely something for fans of traditional metal.
