Target:Blank is a quite new band from Germany and to learn a bit more about them we sent over some questions. Thanks to guitarist Hanno for enlightening us!
Please introduce Target:Blank to the readers!
We are a modern metal 5-piece from Braunschweig, Germany. Our aim is to make the music that we – and you – love and to express our feelings both musically and visually on stage.
How did you come up with the name? And why using computer lingo?
A friend of ours had the fantastic idea of naming the band 'about:blank', which is the name of an empty internet explorer page. Someone else came up with the thought of settling for 'Target:Blank' because it has more of an aggressive feel to suit the music. Everyone was happy, so it was rather coincidental.
Due to the fact that you won 'FFN New Sensation' competition you could enter the studio and record your debut. Result of hard work or was luck on your side? Or a bit of both?
I believe that luck is always the result of hard work. On the other hand there are a lot of great bands out there, so maybe we were a bit lucky, because none of them wanted to take part in the competition...
Your debut is called Protophonic. Why this title?
'Proto' is Greek for 'first', 'phonic' means 'sound'. First sound, kind of fitting for a debut. At least that's what we thought.
And how does the cover fit in?
I like pieces of art that disturb the eye by leaving the beholder wondering what's wrong. In this case it is the center of the picture which consists of an iris replaced by a loudspeaker. Vision turns to sound. Composition turns to music.
Which bands influenced you? And how would you describe your style?
We definitely like the music of bands like Alter Bridge, Disturbed, Shinedown or Sevendust. It can't be denied that these artists have a certain influence on the music we write and play. It is a mixture of aggression and melody, heavy riffs and hook lines, mostly known as modern metal.
The lyrics seems to deal with the darker side of life... What inspires you?
Everything that remains beneath the surface. We all wear masks in our everyday lives and it is creativity – and in our case music – that brings our real desires and visions to the fore. In my case it is the darker part of the soul that is normally subdued. The stronger it becomes in lyrics and dominates my creation.
Will you do a video clip? And which song would you like to visiualize?
If I had an unrestricted budget for a video I'd love to visualize As I Fall with a permanently falling and tumbling camera perspective.
A CD release show is scheduled, any other shows on the way?
Our booking agency is currently working on our tour schedule for the fall.
What can we expect next from Target:Blank?
Energetic live shows, hopefully all over Germany and Europe. See you on the road!
