Live At Sweden Rock Festival

Live At Sweden Rock Festival
(Frontiers Records - 2012)

Legendary Canadian rockers Triumph reunited after a 20 year long hiatus and returned to the stage at Sweden Rock Festival 2008. Finally a CD and DVD of this show is getting into the stores. Unfortunately I can only talk about the CD...

They kicked off the reunion show with When The Lights Go Down. For the show the trio hooked up with guitarist Dave Dunlop to support them on stage - especially during Rik Emmetts' solo part it gives them a fuller sound -, the powerful clear sound shows perfectly the craftsmanship of the Canadians. There is no need to talk about classics like Lay It On The Line and Allied Forces. At Rock'n'Roll Machine they embedded a part of Grieg's Peer Gynt.

I only miss the live feeling a bit... But well, the band delivers and it's fun to hear the classics! If you like Triumph, then the CD/DVD set is a good investment!

Greatest Hits (Remixed)

Greatest Hits (Remixed)
(Frontiers Records - 2010)

Rock fans will know Triumph, the band who was founded in 1975 in Toronto, Canada. There aren't many Canadian rock bands who are known around the globe, beside Triumph it's Rush and Bryan Adams. Art rockers Saga can be added to the list. The trio always had the most loyal fans - and the biggest following - in Northern America. They never really made it in Europe, mainly due to the lack of promoting their albums live. Their heydays were the early to mid-80's, albums like Allied Forces and Never Surrender are classics. Singer and guitarist Rik Emmett left the band in 1988, his successor Phil Xenidis recorded Edge Of Excess, but a year after Phil joined the band, the two original members surprisingly disbanded Triumph. In 2007 Triumph were introduced to the Canadian Music Industry Hall Of Fame and after almost 20 years the trio met again. And Sweden Rock Festival brought them back on stage together.
In the late 1990's Gil Moore and Mike Levin acquired back their whole back catalogue from MCA. Since then they released some live recordings via TML Entertainment.
Now via Frontiers Records releases Greatest Hits Remixed. A good way to re-discover Triumph and with the polished sound they hopefully will reach younger fans, too. Songs like Allied Forces, Hold On or Follow Your Heart still sound good and are quite entertaining. The songs show Triumph's virtuoso playing. Radio hits like Lay It On The Line and Magic Power make wonder why they haven't got more air play outside Canada and the US back then... With Greatest Hits Remixed aged rockers can revive their memories, while young rock fans get the chance to learn a bit about rock history. Due to digital promotion I can only give you the facts about the DVD which has 11 videos plus 3 previously unreleased videos and footage about Triumph's 2008 introduction to the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame.
Fans who have every release of the Canadian arena rockers probably will miss some songs, but they will already have almost every track on CD. Only the cover version of Nazareth's Love Hurts is previously unreleased. Perhaps the DVD will make this package interesting for die-hard fans. But fans of arena rock who don't own all albums of the Canadian trio, get a cool package incl. some specials.
