More Never Is Enough

More Never Is Enough
(InsideOut Music - 2012)

The frontman Neal Morse has a big name already, and with the Transatlantic band he get more success coming to him. They have made 3 CDs from live concerts in Manchester and Tilburg and now put the whole recording to a triple album by the name of More Never Is Enough. The length is 140 minutes, 10 minutes and 30 minutes for the 3 concerts, but they have decided to do it this way. The first and longest CD is 12 songs played in a row and it's called Whirlwind, a genuine symphonic 80's rock concentrated on keyboards from Morse and the style is classic Toto inspired rock. The class is thick with elegance and rock know how. No. 2 is We All Need Some Light, and No. 3 is called Duel With The Devil. All the music follow the same path with ongoing live recording to give the impression that it's just one very long song, but their concept works well. You get much for the money with this triple album and their fans should be satisfied by this new release. True Neal Morse rock music.

The Whirlwind

The Whirlwind
(InsideOut Music - 2009)

Prog rock super group Transatlantic is back! And as unique as the band is, is The Whirlwind! The foursome present an album with just one song, in 12 chapters. And so it begins Overture / Whirlwind, and you can compare this prog rock album with a classic composition, coz like a symphony it has several movements. Mastermind Neal Morse gave the band space, some parts of this epic prog rock opus seem to document jam sessions in the studio... But Mr. Morse always lead them back on track. Beside that it seems that Roine Stolt had more influence then in the past, so you find parts where The Flower Kings shine through. Transatlantic's retro prog is closer to the European variety then to the American... But at the end it's the quality and the joy of playing which counts, and that's what Transatlantic deliver with The Whirlwind. Tracks like Out Of The Night sound airy and have a catchy melody. The warm, earthy sound fits well and make it even more enjoyable. Sometimes you find reminiscences to Pink Floyd and the sound partly reminds me of Kaipa... The quartet is taking you onto a sonic journey, let them be your guide!
Beside the regular edition they have a deluxe edition with a bonus CD incl. 8 tracks - 4 new Transatlantic ones, 4 cover versions - and a DVD with a Making Of. That sounds very interesting, unfortunately I just have the regular edition at the moment.

Live In Europe (DVD)

Live In Europe (DVD)
(InsideOut Music - 2003)

Transatlantic, the progressive super group - Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Neal Morse (ex-Spock's Beard), Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion) - recorded one of their shows in Europe on the tour in 2001. The concert is on one disc. The sound of the DVD is better then on the CD and it's fun to watch the four progsters on stage. Especially during the monumental epic ones like Duel With The Devil, All Of The Above and Stranger In Your Soul - every one more then 25 minutes long! The one and only live documentation of Transatlantic on DVD with Neal Morse who quit Transatlantic and Spock's Beard. What a shame! So, if you never so them live this is the closest you can get. At the moment it don't look like Mr. Morse will return...
On disc #2 is a documentation of the tour (about 40 min.) which includes some out of tune sung Beatles cover versions - you will enjoy it - as well as a photo gallery and as a bonus the video clip of Shine On Your Crazy Diamond, a Pink Floyd cover version which was recorded during the 2001 NAMM show in L.A.
A code 0 double DVD (PAL) with Dolby 5.1 sound. Btw, the concert is also released on CD and as a 4-disc box with CDs and DVDs with a great booklet full of photos!

Track list:
  1. Duel With The Devil
  2. My New World
  3. We All Need Some Light
  4. Suite: Charlotte Pike
  5. Stranger In Your Soul
  6. All Of The Above

Live In Europe

Live In Europe
(InsideOut Music - 2003)

A live recording is always a documentation of a special event. For me this one is special, coz I was at the concert which they recorded and beside that Transatlantic aren't playing so many live shows.
A project of outstanding musicians! As there are Pete Trevawas (Marilion) on bass, guitarist Roine Stolt (Flower Kings), Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and former Spock's Beard multi-instrumentalist and singer Neal Morse. On tour they have a second guitarist, a guy who is known in the prog scene for his work with Pain Of Salvation - Daniel Gildenlöw. Finally they made it onto the stages through out Europe.
The fans who saw this show in Tilburg (Netherlands) had the chance to experienced a concert of great musicianship. The atmosphere of the live show is banned on this double CD, but the double DVD - which is released at the same time as the DCD - can show that even better.
The CDs offer more then 2 hours of live music with frenetic reactions of the audience and humorous comments of the musicians. On CD #1 are songs like Duel With The Devil, My New World, We All Need Some Light and Suite Charlotte Pike Medley while on #2 are Stranger In Your Soul and All Of The Above, both are almost 30 min. long!
From a band like Transatlantic you can expect perfection, but they are able to present the compositions with emotions and in their own way. For me this DCD is a must-buy and I can't wait to see the DVD, coz the visual effects revive the live atmosphere.
I hope that this project will be around for a long time, even if the band activities and solo careers of the musicians make it difficult to arrange... Let's hope that they will have a future....
