Tales Of A Tragic Kingdom

Tales Of A Tragic Kingdom
(Massacre Records - 2001)

The Swedish quintet offer melodic metal with an epic touch and so the album opener Strike Like Thunder starts with fanfares, before going straight ahead. The melodic voice of Joakim Olsson is powerful and fits perfect to the melodic sound of Supreme Majesty. Musically the band is based in the metal of the 80's, but that's just an influence. The album opener is a fast double bass drum track with screaming guitars, but got en epic touch through the vocals and keyboard. The track Not Of This World is a little different, even if some might say it sounds like Stratovarius... But the song has a different vibe compared to the other tracks. But thy have also songs which are not as fast as the others like Towards The Northern Star, even if it ain't really a mid-tempo track. Usually you find a ballad on every album - okay, not on death & black metal albums or hardcore - and with Forever I'll Be the have a powerful balladesque one recorded. The title track starts with the sound of rain, a bell and a monk choir, then you hear the sound of a battle, a flute joins in and you hear horses... An instrumental piece which is like a sound track for the title... Interesting. Next is Queen Of Egypt which starts with oriental sounds, but soon drops back into the known sound of melodic metal. The song is interesting through it's breaks and arranging. The track Supreme Majesty relive the 80's feeling... Does anybody remember the melodic metal of the 80's? If you liked that, listen to this track, coz it's in the vain of it! At least they offer a ballad which starts with acoustic guitar and the vocals of Joakim Olsson, but after awhile the band joins in and it become a real powerful, epic track. Well done!
It's produced by Fredrik Nordström and so there is nothing to say about it sound wise!

Oh, another Scandinavian band! Seems that they have their a fruitful ground for metal. Okay, today it's Supreme Majesty and their debut Tales Of Tragic Kingdom I'll talk about. After the first spin I can say that this is melodic power metal like we know from Edguy, Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. Sure, the music of the Swedish quintet isn't bad, - listen to Keeper Of The Dead, Eye Of The Storm and Not Of This World - but the market seems to be flooded by bands of this genre. Anyway, the Gothenburg-based band has potential, but if they will find their place at the European market... Time will tell.
