Welcome to the End of the World

Welcome To The End Of The World
(Soundmass - 2009)

They released their first CD in 2006 Released From Damnation. Scourged Flesh is a hard working trio from Australia who are purely influenced by Mortification. They play heavy, brutal death metal. It is still a coming band in my eyes. They have not reached their potential strength yet. The new album Welcome To The End Of The World is not so convincing. True, they have the talent, but needs to find a style they can live with. It's not enough to play fast guitar and have a little melody in your songs, you also need to make a real impact with your songs, and Scourged Flesh fail to do that. Only one song, Waves Of Disaster has a good level, the other songs will be forgotten too quickly.

Welcome to the End of the World

Welcome To The End Of The World
(Soundmass - 2009)

When it comes to extreme metal there aren't many bands from Down Under and everybody just thinks of AC/DC and Rose Tattoo. Now Scourged Flesh have their 3rd album out and again the offer death metal based on a heavy stomping groove. The songs on Welcome To The End Of The World remind me a bit of Entombed and Carcass (Heartwork era), but also a little bit of Arch Enemy. The biography also lists Bolt Thrower, but I can only detect minimal reminiscences (at Shadow Storm) and the Australian can't reach the level of the British Gods. Their sound isn't intense and they don't have the grinding grooves. Similarities to Obituary - mentioned in the biography - I can't find at all. The songs show some potential, but at the end it gets boring... The album lacks some con-genial riffing, some catchiness and intensity. Part of the problem is the production which lacks power... The right punch. A decent album, but it can't really carry you away.
