Ruled By Reason is essentially a death-core band hailing from Cleveland, Ohio and The Dawning Of Dystopia is the band's first full-length album.
The album begins with the title track which is a short, pleasant and melodic keyboard track that lure you into a false sense of security for the pummeling you're about to take. Following this Ruled By Reason fly the flag of death-core high with various nods to the likes of Carnifex, Caliban and Lamb Of God amongst others. In addition to this there is obviously a huge amount of inspiration taken from melodeath, in particular the Gothenburg scene with a good helping of In Flames and Soilwork present in the music of Ruled By Reason. If you look for more influences then you can spot quite a bit of Children Of Bodom worship in the guitar styles too.
Vocally, the band stay firmly within the metal-core realm with fairly average, unintelligible, hoarse screams combined with, thankfully occasional, clean vocals of the typically whiney variety. This is the weakest part of the album for me as it is the vocal style more than the music that puts me off many other bands in the metal- and death-core sub genres.
Musically, I found Ruled By Reason quite a listenable band. Sure, I don't think for me it would be something I'd ever choose to listen to, but I don't find this album as nauseating as many of the band's contemporaries. If you're into any of the bands I've mentioned above I can recommend you to check out Ruled By Reason. If, like me, you're not exactly a fan of any of said bands then approach this with caution. A good album for the genre but its not going to convince the detractors.
