No Gravity is the brainchild of Italian guitarist Simone Fiorletta, he hooked up with some Italian musicians for this project and hired different vocalists for the self-titled debut. Among the singers is Vanden Plas' Andy Kuntz and Fabio Lione.
The opener Sailing On Sight is a heavy, progressive power metal tune which features Fiorletta's guitar play. For an opener this one is a real challenge! It's highly complex and it's the vocal arrangements which make it difficult to get into this one. Keyboarder Andrea de Paoli isn't using a warm Hammond-like sound, his keyboard sound is closer to the one you find in EBM and electro-based gothic. Next in line is The Killer and this one would have been a better opener in my opinion. It's more straight forward and the vocals can hook you up. In the middle of the song they slow down, the keyboard takes over the lead and the tune has a slight Oriental touch. The vocal line partly reminds me of Tom S. Englund... Very powerful tune with some shredding passages. A bit like old Symphony X... Can't Dream Anymore is a dash more melodic and offers a great vocal performance. At times I think the keyboard is overdoing it, even if it's in the background and the guitar riffing is more up-front. Voices From The Past is more aggressive, offers varying vocal styles and is so sticking out a bit. At Religious Beliefs they add some Arabic sounds, speed changes and different voices. This is a power metal tune with progressive elements, Oriental sounds, distorted vocals - a sonic journey. Time to ease off a bit, I'm Bleeding is a powerful balladesque tune which will soon enchant you. I can imagine this one would sound even better with a symphonic touch... The drums are a bit too prominent due to complex patters, a more simple drumming would have give the vocals more space... attention. At Nowadays they take you onto a sonic roller coaster ride. Another slow, balladesque one is Touchin' My Enemy, this one even has a slight symphonic touch. For the closer Unexpected Guest they speed up again. The 10+ minute long tune is partly riff-based but also offers complex keyboard-laden passages. It takes more then 4 minutes til vocals set in. At the closer progressive elements are more prominent, but it's still very heavy.
Simone Fiorletta produced the album at his studio, only the vocal parts where done at various studios chosen by the singers. In my opinion they should look for a suitable singer to achieve a more homogenous sound. Anyway, a strong debut of No Gravity!
