The Burden Of God

The Burden Of God
(AFM Records - 2012)

The decision to let the drummer Jo Amore be the new singer of the band was a good decision from Nightmare, now giving the drumsticks to Jo's brother David Amore. With his fantastic voice Jo raises the level of the band, and on the new CD called The Burden Of God we get some good material. Crimson Empire has the tight heavy fistful metal attitude and makes a super performance. The Burden Of God is the title song and has enough power to catch up for the whole album, a good drive and hard metal rock. Shattered Hearts starts slow and melodic but soon gets more hard and metal as the song progresses, super attitude from Nightmare. Final Outcome is one of the best songs on the album, a competent well-written hard metal song with a catchy powerful rhythm that will be appreciated by the fans.

One Night Of Insurrection

One Night Of Insurrection
(AFM Records - 2011)

The French power metallers Nightmare proves that they are still in the top of the European metal, and to celebrate their 30 years in the business they release a monster CD, and also a DVD both releases are recorded at a concert in their hometown of Grenoble, France. It is obvious that the experience that comes from 30 years of heavy metal gained them very well. Nightmare have a sound that newcomers doesn't get out of the blue. Their style is their own, but there a elements of Judas Priest and Black Sabbath in their songs, especially the drums are clearly inspired by Scott Travis from Judas Priest. It starts with the song Eternal Winter, a basic power metal rhythm that puts a pressure that are truly amazing, difficult to find a more powerful song on the album. On the song Heretic we get very solid metal and again this enormous pressure that the recording gives. Legions Of The Rising Sun is all melody and power, Secret Rules is a soft powerful song but make no mistake, it is a heavy as they come. Queen Of Love And Pain shows genius creative guitar exploitations, this song really catches the concert crowds. Three Mile Island is a solid song, and I know that it is meant for a live CD, but it is far too long, it looses some of the intensity when it just goes on and on, maybe it's meant to please the crowd, but those 8 minutes could easily have done it with 5 minutes. Target For Revenge is a soft and very heavy song, and to sum up the CD we get The Watchtower as the finishing song, a strong very heavy rhythm that leaves no doubt about the competence of songs chosen for this live recording from Nightmare. On the DVD there are 4 extra songs, and despite some of the songs on the CD kind of serves as bonus material the bottom line shows that Nightmare still have the quality and energy to give splendid performance.

Insurrection

Insurrection
(AFM Records - 2009)

The French band Nightmare was founded in 1979 and 30 years later they present Insurrection. The band has signed a deal with AFM Records and isn't just back with a new album they also have a new guitarist recruited.
The opener is called Eternal Winter and reminds me of Brainstorm.... And actually that's the problem, the band sounds like one or the other band... They have no own identity and that was a problem of the predecessor Genetic Disorder, too. Sure, Eternal Winter is a cool tune, but lacks originality. A bit more thrashy is The Gospel Of Judas where Jo Amore varies from powerful clean vocals to screams. At the title track Insurrection it seems that Mr. Amore tries to sound like Rob Halford - at least partly. Legions Of The Rising Sun is a fast, but melodic tune and at the end a bit repetitive. Decameron is a riff-based metal tune, kinda the same as Legions Of The Rising Sun. Balladesque they kick off Target For Revenge, later they go full force. A heavy melodic rocker which lacks - at least for me - intensity. The song can't touch me. The closer Angels Of Glass is quite good, a fast power metal track with crunchy riffs and melody.
In France the quintet has their fans, but internationally it's a bit tougher to gain ground for them. Fans of US metal and power metal á la Brainstorm should check out: Mirrors Of Damnation and Legions Of The Rising Sun. If you like what you hear, then get a copy. But if you have to keep an eye on your money, you should probably wait for the new Brainstorm album - and then make a decision.... No bad album, but nowadays it needs more then that... At the end it's a matter of taste.

Genetic Disorder

Genetic Disorder
(Regain Records - 2007)

The French band Nightmare started back in 1979, but took a longer break between 1987 and 1999. They never been really big, not even in their home country.
The sound of Nightmare is clearly based in the 80's metal and has neo-classical citations. Nothing Left Behind is a powerful up-tempo tune based in guitar-riffing. The song starts with marching drums and slowly, then they push the accelerator a bit down. The voice of Jo Amore is powerful, a bit raspy and fits well to the guitar-driven song. With Battleground For Suicide they storm off! A real fast one, again the vocals are not enough up-front, but well... The song hooks you up and is perfect for some head banging. A bit early Iced Earth like... With Queen Of Love & Pain they turn back to the 80's metal and somehow I have to think of Lefay... But the guitars have a Maiden-ish touch. And Conspiracy has elements which remind me of their fellow countrymen Sortilége... for a brief moment. This song is a combination of thrashy guitars, fast drumming and melodic vocals. A bit too simple is Leader Of The Masquerade... Too much 80's like... With The Dominion Gate (Part II) they continue the title track of their last album The Dominion Gate. The song reminds me partly of Masterplan... Its a bit more melodic then the other tracks on this disc. Speed metal like starts The Winds Of Sin and it stays thrashy. Another neck breaker. But the keyboard part in the middle seems a bit out of place and takes off some power. A powerful metal anthem is A Thrill Of Death. Well done!
A thrashy power metal album with authentic reminiscence to the 80's metal. Without singer Jo Amore this would be just a so-so album, but Jo Amore ennobles the album! He is their biggest asset! Everybody who loves powerful, melodic metal with thrashy parts and 80's elements should listen to the latest Nightmare! This Nightmare you will enjoy!!
