Long Life Death

Long Life Death
(Witchinghour Productions - 2012)

Greek trio Naer Mataron was founded in 1994 and this is their 6th studio album. This time Greek letters are shown on the cover, they mean Long Life Death.

With an atmospheric intro they start into the album, the spoken words are done by an unnamed woman... Actually it's the title track. Then they dive into the album full of fast tunes, due to the vocals of Kaiadas the songs get a death metal-edge. Partly the guitar is going death metal, too. But then there are true black metal passages, I think purists will have a hard time getting into this.... Personally I think they are stronger when they ease off a bit - like at some parts of I Am Lucifer, Messenger Of Your Death. For a moment the guitar at Parade Into Centuries reminds me of some post black metal stuff... But mainly they stick to the black-ish sound and only the growls add a different flavor. A decent album, all songs on the same level... I miss something which really sticks out, but perhaps that's just me - again.

Black metal purists won't enjoy Naer Mataron's album, but everybody who likes death metal as well as black metal should give it a try. Vinyl lovers should be quick, coz the vinyl edition is limited to 333 copies!

River At Dash Scalding

River At Dash Scalding
(Black Lotus Rec. - 2003)

The Greek black metal band was started in 1994 by Morpheas and Lord Alatoth as an extreme black metal band which lyrically is dedicated to the glorification of ancient Europe. During the years line-up changes took place and even Lord Alatoth who had the initial idea was kicked out.
In 1998 their debut Up From The Ashes hit the stores. Soon the trio made themselves known in the black metal scene. So that the debut and the following CD were sold-out soon. Black Lotus Records gave permission for a strictly limited vinyl release to Aphelion Productions. The three-some made new fans by taking part at a Tribute To Bathory (1997) and Tribute To Celtic Frost (2002). While other bands get more 'commercial', they get more extreme. A good example is The Life And Death Of Europe. On The Great Meridian Tide they work with spoken words in addition to the screams.

Two songs were composed by Nordvargar of MZ412 who also played percussion on one track. One of my favorite tracks is Ancestor - Worship which starts with marching sounds, screaming guitar riffing and spoken words. Very intense, but unusual. No fast parts, no screams! Also Salvatores Dei starts slowly, but then hell breaks loose! Check them out!
