Invidious Dominion

Invidious Dominion
(Massacre Records - 2010)

Malevolent Creation are veterans of the Florida death metal scene with Invidious Dominion being their 11th full-length album. Having said that I've never actually heard any of their previous albums so I wasn't really sure what to expect here.
First things first though. I have to give kudos for the album cover which is stunning... stunning to the point of being tattoo-inspiring! So, the outer coat is tasty but would the contents of the disc live up to this high standard?
Well, the answer is a resounding yes! This is no frills death metal with good song writing and high levels of playing. The riffs are chunky and the guitars churn them out with apparent ease before launching into blistering solos that will have you burning your fingers on your air guitar! As is usual the bass is lost in the mix but its no big loss really as the guitars and drums are solid enough. The drumming in particular is fantastic.
Vocally, Brett Hoffman delivers the goods with an excellent, pissed off growl that as well as being suitably extreme is also discernible. He doesn't have the greatest range but to be honest he really doesn't need it as his voice perfectly suits the music of Malevolent Creation.
There is a case for arguing that Malevolent Creation are doing nothing new on this album and its true. This is nothing but solid death metal. To be honest though, I'd rather listen to 100 albums of good death metal such as this than one sub-par album from a band trying to be different.
Any fan of death metal will be happy to have this album in their collection. Hopefully these guys will be on tour soon!

Invidious Dominion

Invidious Dominion
(Massacre Records - 2010)

Floridian death metal legend Malevolent Creation are back with a new album, new label, and new management. And bassist Jason Blachowicz is back. Malevolent Creation are known for extreme death metal and have influenced countless newcomers during their 23 year long career. I'm still surprised that the band is still existing - after all those years and 10 studio albums - as they have been through line-up changes frequently. Some members returned, but they also had to deal with incompetent labels and managers and so the band of guitarist Phil Fasciana never really had the chance to make it big, coz their albums were always very strong and a good example for ultra-fast old school death metal. Okay, the predecessor Doomsday X wasn't as strong as their other releases, but the songs were strong, it was just the weak production. They learnt and sound magician Eric Rutan (Hate Eternal) brought back the powerful aggressive sound incl. brutal riff orgies, aggro shouting and rapid-fire drumming by Gus Rios. The songs are all ultra-fast, spiced up with blast attacks and goose-bumps are guaranteed! Only short groove parts give a little time to breath before it's time for some more head banging. No doubt Malevolent Creation are skilled and the songs are written straight to the point. This time the songs are quite short, powerful death metal attacks without any rubbish. With Invidious Dominion they show the youngsters that they are still alive and kickin'! This is pure uncompromising Florida death metal. I hope that Massacre Records give them the support they deserve and bring them back to their height. The legendary fivesome delivered a brutal album, a must-have for fans of extreme death metal! Only the short running time lowers the rating. Btw, the digi-pack has 2 bonus tracks!
