Damage Control

Damage Control
(Frontiers - 2012)

Jeff Scott Soto has a new album out, it's called Damage Control. It's 3 years since his last studio album, but after Beautiful Mess he delivered 2 live albums - and spent a lot time on the road with Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

The album kicks off with Give A Little More, a catchy rocker with heavy riffs and some melancholy vocal passages. The title track Damage Control is a good one - does anybody expect a weak track from JSS? -, but it isn't a real ear catcher. For Look Inside Your Heart Mr. Soto did a video, so I recommend to check it out! Actually the up-tempo track is the first highlight of Damage Control for me.

Die A Little is a bit too poppy for me, but with Tears That I Cry they can hook me up again. The riff-based Krazy World is another highlight, the prominent bass and heavy riffs give it a heavy edge and a the hookline will soon haunt you! AfterWorld is another rocker, this time spiced up with big backings and a cool guitar solo. The closer NeverEnding War is a slow, slightly melancholy rocker with a deeper meaning.

The deluxe edition has 3 bonus tracks, but I only have the regular edition and so I can't tell you anything about these tracks.

Fans of JSS won't be disappointed, but I think that it depends on which of his albums are your favorites you will favorize different tunes. I prefer the rock tunes, but at the end of the day there aren't any weak tracks and so it's just a matter of taste.

Live At Firefest

Live At Firefest
(Frontiers - 2010)

This is the 4th live album of JSS who released live albums in 2003, 2004 and 2009. One Night In Madrid was released 2009 and now fans get the Firefest show. He played Firefest 2008 and so the show is almost the same as One Night In Madrid, just the cover version of Frozen is missing. Both shows were recorded during the Beautiful Mess tour, so it's no big surprise and even the solos are almost the same. But one has to give respect for JSS to head over to the UK over the weekend - he was rehearsing with TSO at that time -, have just one rehearsal with the band and then rock the house. Okay, the band played together before, but it's been almost a year since the last show. Why it's a DCD I have no clue, coz with 71+ minutes running time it would have fit onto a single CD. For fans who have been at Firefest it's a great way to keep the memory alive, but if you aren't a die-hard fan and if you already own One Night In Madrid, then you probably like to spend money on a different release.... If you don't have the Spanish show in your collection, then you probably like to grab the Firefest show, coz it rocks more then the Madrid recording. But it's more a matter of taste then a matter of quality, but nobody expects JSS to release a half-baked album.

One Night In Madrid

One Night In Madrid
(Frontiers - 2009)

Jeff Scott Soto (JSS). It will take far too much space to make an introduction for the former frontman of Journey. He has now made a new double CD One Night In Madrid with old and new songs together in a mix of his own. It is evident above all doubts that Soto is a musical capasity like only a few others in todays music life. He is spreading his musical interest wide, and most dominant on this double album is the phenomenal guitar play. Best songs on the album are Drowning From Your Love and Our Song.
Unfortunately the production of the CD has gone a little sour. It is now flowing very good, and the mix of songs could have been better. He makes small guitar solos and put them as a song of their own, that is not the smartest thing to do.
The choice of songs is a very wide spectrum, but the more you listen to it, it tends to be a little boring as the CDs progresses. There are no grand plan about the production, no bonus songs, it just suddenly ends. And the way Soto ends the Madrid concert is with a 12 minute long medley.

One Night In Madrid

One Night In Madrid
(Frontiers - 2009)

Melodic metal, hard rock fans know Jeff Scott Soto from his various bands and projects, but lately he seems to concentrate more on his solo career and now he has another live album recorded. One Night In Madrid was recorded earlier this year on his Beautiful Mess tour. The show was also recorded for a DVD which will hit the stores together with the double CD.
The intro is leading you into 21st Century which shows the band tight and the Brooklyn boy at his best! The audience was celebrating this special night right from the start and when JSS did Our Song the house was on fire - at leas it sounds like that... Definitely one of the highlights! After the rocker Drowning it was time for a drum solo, soon followed by a guitar solo of Jorge. As Jorge is from Madrid it got loud when JSS introduced him at the end of the band introduction. Time for another highlight... Broken Man!
A cool version of Madonna's Frozen in a medley with Seal's Crazy shows that this songs could have been real rockers - at least when someone like Jeff Scott Soto sings them! A great piano medley followed, but they had another medley prepared to end the set - and if you look at the track list, then you'll realize that it would be a shame to miss this double CD / DVD! A must-buy for JSS fans, but I highly recommend this release to all fans of hard rock and melodic metal!

Beautiful Mess

Beautiful Mess
(Frontiers - 2009)

With Beautiful Mess Jeff Scott Soto presents his new solo album and soon becomes obvious that JSS blends his influences into a beautiful mess. The opener 21st Century is a cool rocker with a dash funk and heavy riffs. But the tune can also surprise you with slow parts and a catchy hook. A kind of old-fashioned balladesque rocker is Cry Me A River, but the track sounds fresh. An emotional track which comes alive through JSS vocals. Next you get a ballad called Gin & Tonic Sky based on acoustic guitar and vocals. Acoustic guitar leads into Hey which is an semi-acoustic rocker which soon hooks you up. Great tune! A melancholy ballad is Broken Man. This song has a soul! Enchanting! An up-tempo tune is Mountain, this one sticks out with its funky sounds and heavy riffing. A heavy up-tempo rocker is Our Song which carries a positive vibe, but also has some mid-paced parts. A song has a party feeling, even if the lyrics don't go along with it. But a very cool tune! With Bring It Home he presents a track which is based in 70's rock, but again JSS wove in other elements... Partly it gets a bit funky. With a heavy groove JSS kicks off Testify - and hooks you up! Slowly they start Wherever You Wanna Go with acoustic guitar, but they speed up - for awhile. An emotional tune with balladesque passages and rocking parts. The last track is Kick It, another ballad, but this time a bit Beatles-que. The physical CD has 2 bonus tracks and a bonus DVD. The first bonus track is Heart Starts Healing which is a balladesque rocker with a cool melody and will soon make you sing along. An ear catcher. Last, but not least Take U Over With Me - another balladesque rocker which fits well to the album.
The bonus DVD offers video clips for 21st Century, Gin & Tonic Sky - also as piano version - and Hey as well as an interview.
My personal highlights are Broken Man, Hey and Our Song. If you want to check out the album, you should also check out: 21st Century, Mountain and Wherever You Wanna Go.

Lost In The Translation

Lost In The Translation
(Frontiers - 2009)

At Prism Jeff Scott Soto had different musicians involved, for Lost In The Translation he gathered some musicians who did the whole album with him and so the album has a band feeling. For the re-release JSS added 5 bonus tracks incl. the bonus track of the original Japanese version and an acoustic version of an album track.
They open up with the up-tempo melodic rocker Believe In Me. The opener is catchy and after a few spins it will haunt you for days! No surprise that this was released as an appetizer for the album. Especially the guitar play sticks out here, but with Gary Schutt and Howie Simon it was something you could expect, but this one features Neal Schon!. The following tune is Soul Divine which is a catchy rocker which reminds me a bit of a Tyketto track - at least partly... But there is something else... a bit Mr Big, I think... Anyway, the track is cool! The up-tempo rocker Drowning shows JSS heavier, but still melodic. And it becomes clear that this album is more melodic metal then hard rock, but I think the fans of Jeff Scott Soto will welcome the harder edge - as long as it's melodic! But the most obvious change is the guitar play! With If This Is The End he presents a moody ballad which is really touching! This one gives you shivers! Just excellent! Then it's time for the title track! A guitar lead part kicks off and lead you into Lost In The Translation, a catchy up-tempo rocker. This one will soon hook you up. The heavy Doin' Time begins with drums and sharp riffs. The track has a slight melancholy touch... But then there is a spark of hope. Another up-tempo rocker is High Time, but with a positive, cheerful vibe. A piano leads you into the balladesque Beginning 2 End... In the beginning only piano and Jeff's voice - enchanting. But then it becomes a powerful balladesque tune with a catchy melody. Some might find this one too cheesy, but this song adds some variety and everybody who loves the balladesque side of hard rock / melodic metal will love it. Very heavy and with crunchy riffs they present On My Own, but they combine heaviness with soaring melodies. Cool one! More melodic, but a bit faster then the predecessor is Find Our Way which is another heavy rocker with a neo-classical influenced guitar solo. Time to slow down a bit and to present a ballad with acoustic guitars - Sacred Eyes. Bass-driven is Dulce Lady, but the heavy guitar riffs add some aggression which isn't softened by the vocals. With Turned The Page, the Japanese bonus track, they kick of the bonus track section. A catchy melodic metal song which rocks - and finally everybody can hear it. Another ballad with acoustic guitars is As I Do 2 U, later the band joins in and it becomes a semi-acoustic ballad. And balladesque they continue with This Ain't The Love. A powerful melodic rocker is Lonely Shade Of Blue which surprises you with a saxophone part! The acoustic version of Soul Divine shows the track totally different... And it reminds me even more of Mr. Big here, but hell, this one is cool!
Some might welcome the heavier melodic metal tracks, while others will dig the balladesque stuff... The bonus tracks are more balladesque stuff, so make up your mind, when you prefer the melodic metal side of JSS. Anyway, this is value for money and if you enjoy good hard rock and melodic metal, then this is a real treat!

Prism (re-release)

Prism (re-release)
(Frontiers - 2009)

Since Jeff Scott Soto stepped into the limelight with Yngwie Malmsteen - at Malmsteen's debut album - he sang in many amazing bands and JSS presented in 1994 his first solo album Love Parade. In 2002 his second solo album Prism was released by Frontiers Records, now the Italian label is re-released the album and Mr. Soto added 6 bonus tracks! That's value for money!
The album opens up with the up-tempo rocker Eyes Of Love - and soon it hooks you up! The focus is on the melodies and the amazing vocals, a kind of classic rock tune with heavy riffing, but still something classic rock radio will play. With Heaven Knows JSS presents a ballad which kicks off with vocals and piano, then the others join in and it becomes a strong AOR tune. One of the highlights is the emotional tune Don't Come Easy! An ear catcher! After another balladesque track they speed up a bit for I Want To Take You Higher which shows the New Yorker a bit differently - with brass and a funky touch and a dash of soul. Next in line is Holding On which was previously released as a kind of appetizer. This song really is a smash hit! A bombastic rocker with brilliant vocals! Very emotional! 2 Late 4 Goodbyes is a 80's Bon Jovi-like tune and would have got quite some air play at that time, but it's still a good song, even is a bit too polished... Quite heavy is How Long which surprised with crunchy riffs and a heavy punch, but also with great choruses. With the touching balladesque tune Don't Walk Away the original release ends - well, there was the Eyes Of Love video as a bonus.
The first bonus track is Good Love, another great balladesque track with a 'singing guitar'. The song fits well to the songs at the album. With 2012 JSS added the song which was originally the bonus track in Japan of Essential Ballads. I'm glad this finally is available to everybody now, coz it's a great acoustic ballad. And the following Send Her My Love is another ballad, this time piano-based. A live recording is Again 2 Be Found which is a catchy heavy rocker which soon hooks you up! They present the heavy melodic metal track Stand Up live. This is the heaviest track on the whole CD, but its the contrast between the heavy parts and the melodic vocals. Last, but not least you get 4 You, a song which was originally released on Jeff Scott Soto's first solo album Love Parade. This one shows JSS a bit differently, a bit more pop rock and partly he sings higher. Interesting, but personally not one of my favorites.
Fans of JSS who have the album might consider the re-release, coz with 6 bonus tracks you get some interesting songs. If you are a fan of JSS and don't own this one so far, should get their copy now!
