Dark Matter

Dark Matter
(InsideOut Music - 2004)

The prog rockers are around for about 20 years. It's been 3 years since their last release The Seventh House now they are back with Dark Matter. But this isn't a dark album, even if the band is very atmospheric. With Subterranea they probably recorded their milestone... And with Dark Matter they recorded another one. The classic prog rock bands of the 70's had a special magic and they didn't need to fight each other with complex playing or a battle of notes. The clash of the egos created the magical sound. And here IQ succeeded in reviving this magical moments. Sure, Peter Nicholl's isn't the best singer, but his voice creates together with Martin Orfords keyboard a certain atmosphere. The British never sound bombastic or even cheesy, coz guitarist Mike Holmes' dark soundscapes built the counterpart to the keyboard. With Harvest Of Souls they recorded a monumental song which lasts more then 24 minutes! And it's the highlight of the album. That doesn't mean that the rest of the songs is bad, no way! IQ recorded an album which stands in line with the classics of early Genesis, Marillion and partly Spock's Beard. The track Born Brilliant remind me of ELP... Perhaps this album hasn't the catchiness which Subterranea partly has, but on the other hand it means that even when you listen to 20th time you'll not get bored. If you love prog rock or one of the mentioned bands, then you should check this out!
