Illumina Tenebras Meas

Illumina Tenebras Meas
(self-released - 2006)

Illuminadi is a band from Poland which is out to leave a mark on the music world with their mixture of symphonic parts and melodic death metal. The first song kicks off with violin and cello in a classic way, but then the band sets in and presents with Jezdziec a symphonic melodic metal tune. Due to the use of cello and violin the band has a quite unique sound. And the Polish vocals - clean and growls - fit well to their sound. Btw, guitarist Jan Trebacz is responsible for the clean vocal parts while Rajmund Jelen is taking over the growls. Especially the contrast between the heavy riffs and the fragile violin parts create a certain magic. The 2nd tune Czterdziestadoba starts with a variation of a classic theme - a heavy rocker with a monster groove. Partly the vocals are more spoken words and give the song a light crossover feeling... But then the chorus has something majestic... And something sad. Interesting tune, but it gives you mixed feelings - especially when you hear some monkey shouting in the background.
With Hymn Of All Creation they offer a folk inspired heavy rocker. The English clean vocals are anthem-like and the choirs have of some true metal vibe... Mainly mid-tempo, but towards the end it speeds up and Rajmund's growls take over... Jan's clean vocals in the background remind me someone... Anyway, a real metal anthem! The Betrayal starts slowly with a violin, clean vocals - and quite sad. But then in the second half growls and heavy riffs dominate. The last tune is Is Qui Est with a symphonic, almost black metal-ish intro, but then becomes faster and surprises with dragging slow parts and fast melodic metal elements.
The Polish band Illuminandi has some very interesting ideas, but should overdo some parts to make the songs stronger. But this is more a demo then a professional release, even if the sound quality is quite good. If you like bands who cross lines, then check them out!
