Anybody expected a Christmas album of punk rocker Billy Idol? Definitely not me, but that's exactly what he's now offering.
It starts of with the happy Frosty The Snowman and soon its clear that this isn't a punk rock version of traditional Christmas songs and carols. Billy Idol presents the 17 songs mainly acoustic, at least stripped down the bombast they often come with. Some might doubt that Mr. Idol can sing this classics, he can. Even if he's not one of the best singers and at some parts this becomes obvious, this album is fun. Not a rock album, but a CD everybody will enjoy who is tired of all the kitschy ones and all the children's choirs. At Merry Christmas Baby his limited vocal range is obvious, but this song has some country-rock feeling. Not a typical choice, especially with the spoken words part at the end of the song. The swinging White Christmas is something everybody knows, but not everybody will like this version. Some songs rock, others swing and then there is a classic like God Rest Ye, Merry Gentleman which is more solemnly presented - even if this carol is cut down.
This Christmas album is different. It has classics of different kinds and its more like Christmas songs sung at home. And actually this is the origin in a way, coz at home Billy Idol is the one singing all the traditional ones for his family at the holidays. And now he makes his versions public. Every year we get another load of Christmas albums, and nobody needs them all. If you are tired of bombastic sounds, choirs and orchestral ones, but need something which don't rock to hard to please your family, try this one.
