I.Q.U.

I.Q.U.
(self-released - 2002)

The Brazilian quintet was founded back in 1993 by guitarist Hugo Mariutti (now also Shaman), drummer Fabio Elsas and bassist André Nikakis. Several line-up changes took place until their found a stable line-up which includes singer Frank Harris and keyboarder Cristiano Altieri. Their aim was to combine powerful metal with progressive elements. On their current demo CDS you find the track I.Q.U. which is also available through www.henceforth.com.br.
Lyrically the song deals with some serious topic which you might not expect. It tells about the modern way of killings which are more based on technology than just 100 years ago. An interesting way to see it from what death brings. The lyrics are written by drummer Fabio Elsas.
Musically they remind me a bit of Nevermore.... And than there is a vocal part which let me think about Angra... Well, Hugo Mariutti is the brother of Luis Mariutti (bassist of Shaman, ex-Angra) who produced the demo together with Luis Guillherme Canaes who is known for his work with ANGRA. Beside that André Matos (Virgo, Shaman, ex-Angra) added some vocals which make it even more interesting to listen to the track, coz the different voices gave the song a special atmosphere.
Actually it's sad that this is just one track! This band should soon enter the studio to record a full-length album! So many bands have a record deal and have not 10% of the skills and talent of these guys!

This is a more then decent presentation of another Brazilian band. Musically the band is playing music in the vain of Brazilians - probably most successful - band Angra, not just because former Angra bassist Luis Mariutti was involved in the production and because of the guest appearance of Shaman singer André Matos, they have their own sound. Henceforth is the name of the band and it's important to them to have their own sound and to be independent.
The appealing 1-track demo is pleasing with a good quality and a combination of a sense for melodies (especially the vocals), power - I won't say heaviness - and progressive elements. After I heard this superb appetizer I'm curious to hear more tracks of the Brazilian band. I hope that I soon can tell you more about this talented band from South America.
