No Survival On Arrival makes a thunder intro to the 5th album from the German band who keep heavy metal to its roots. They concentrate on playing simple and melodic metal songs where most of metal fans can get enjoyment of it. Party rock and powerful songs follow each other throughout the album where we get the splendid Start A Riot, melodic good rhythms with metal so heavy that the riot literally starts. Also the fine ballad Turbulence & Decadence scores many points for being genuine heavy and beautiful. Stand Your Ground includes all the qualities a hard metal song should consist of, a great song with super guitars. All the other songs are also on a high level, and Dancing On Torpedoes give both a humoristic and powerful image to Gun Barrel's music. A superb album from the German metal veterans.

Gunniversary

Their 10th anniversary the Cologne rockers Gun Barrel celebrate with a DVD called Gunniversary. The DVD is a kind of retrospective of their career, the concert as well as the bonus section is just great. The documentary is the essential part of the DVD, during 140 minutes the band members were introduced, you can listen to interviews, learn about the highs and lows, take a look at backstage activities and listen to some anecdotes. You also get 2 video clips, some outtakes and a funny story from Wacken 2004. The hidden features are quite cool, but you have to find them on your own! This documentary is as much fun as the music. The concert was recorded on Nov. 7th 2009 in Siegburg at Klub Kubana. Live At The Kubana contains 12 songs with about 47 min. running time. Unfortunately there aren't all songs they played that night on the DVD, but it's a kind of best-of. The CD version offers 17 songs and can be downloaded from the bands website. The 12 tracks on the DVD show the live energy the band is known for and proofs that their new singer Silver is fully integrated in the band. Gun Barrel can call themselves lucky to have such a great frontman in the band.

Sound and image quality are perfect, so nothing to complain.

Resume: Gun Barrel present on Gunniversary a great concert, a genuine live experience as well as a bonus part with tons of information about the band. I really dig the bonus stuff, coz it gives a lot information about the band and that's what the fans want, right? It's fun; you get value for money as the DVD will be sold for app. 16 Euro!

Gun Barrel are celebrating their 10th anniversary, only one original member is left, but who cares as long as the guys have fun on stage and the fans in front of it?! Last November they played in Siegburg at The Kubana where they recorded the show for this live CD and a DVD. The DVD Gunniversary is distributed by SAOL while the album can be downloaded at www.gunbarrel.bandcamp.com for 11,99 Euro - MP3 320k or FLAC - and where you can order the digipak for just a little more. The digipak is limited to 1,000 copies and hand numbered! So be quick!

For singer Silver it's the first recordings with Gun Barrel, even if he already played some show with the Cologne rockers. It's obvious that this is a live recording which haven't been overdone in the studio and so the live energy of Gun Barrel is well documented. Sure, not everything is perfect, but which band delivers a perfect concert? As Silver sings the songs of his predecessors he sticks to their way of singing them and so it will be interesting to hear him do songs written after he joined the band. Songs like Gate To God show that right from the start Gun Barrel offered heavy rockers with a catchy hook. It's fun to listen to songs like Straight Down To Hell and Outlaw Invasion.

Anyway, Live At The Kubana is offering a best-of off their 4 studio albums, their fans will be happy to get a live documentation - with new singer Silver. Fans of heavy metal / power metal who don't have all albums of Gun Barrel it's a great possibility to get a collection of their songs. And if you haven't seen them live yet, then this will tell you what you missed!
