Alligator Farm

Alligator Farm
(Mascot Records - 2000)

The success of Mr. Big is nothing to talk about. After years of touring and recording the band members became tired of this monotony and in 1998 Paul Gilbert decided to start a solo project.
Gilbert is known do his guitar work, but up to the day of stepping out as a solo artist his song writing and vocal abilities haven't been known. With the debut King Of Clubs he put out the basis of his solo career and the follow-up Flying Dog was pretty successful and went gold in Japan! The Japanese tour following the release of his second album let Gilbert perform in sold-out venues.
Time goes by and we write 2001 with the latest release of guitar hero Paul Gilbert which is called Alligator Farm. The new silver disc of the guitarist contains 14 tracks and is produced by himself. The new output went gold again. On the album are some sentimental, balladesque tracks as well as a few hard rocking tunes which feature the virtuous guitar play of Mr. Gilbert. Really interesting is the cover version of the Spice Girls hit 2 Become 1 - Well done!!!
Mr. Gilbert is joined by Tony Spinner and Scotty Johnson at guitars (Johnson also played different keys), Mike Szuter on bass and on drums Jeff Martin.
It's obvious to the listener that the involved musicians really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. Listen to it!

Flying Dog

Flying Dog
(Shrapnel Records - 2000)

On the cover of the new solo album of Paul Gilbert, known for his work with Mr. Big, he let dogs fly. The album has 12 tracks were Mr. Gilbert not just plays guitar, he also sings! The 50 minutes long disc shows beside Paul Gilbert Bruce Bouillet and Tony Spinner on the six-string, Mike Szuter on bass and backings and Johnny Fedevich on drums while keyboards and percussion's played by mastermind Gilbert himself.
A decent album of guitar rock, nothing outstanding. The guitar work is very good, but that is what everybody expects from a guitar hero like Gilbert. I really like his vocals and this is what makes it more interesting. Resume: Beside the outstanding guitar work Paul Gilbert shows that he has a decent voice which fits well to the melodic guitar rock. He integrated different influences and so create his own style. Not just for fans of MR. BIG!
