One By One... Dead

One By One... Dead
(self-released - 2010)

Last year Swedish band Everwhere presented Black Dawn, an EP they released via their website. And now the Swedish have a new EP which can also be downloaded from their website. So there is no reason not to listen to Everwhere!
The trio recorded 5 songs which are straight-forward thrash metal with a dash of death metal, but also with melodic guitar solos by singer and guitarist Jonas Blomqvist. At Death Prevail they partly remind me of Kreator... The title track One By One... Dead is offering fast riffs, but also a heavy groove and the song is almost catchy. For And I Burst they ease off a bit, the drum pattern is more complex - at least partly - and with heavy riffs and growls they present themselves slightly different. The closer Hate is also a bit more complex - without lacking heaviness. Once again the guitar play is one of the strong points of One By One... Dead.
Everwhere has made a step forward, even if not as big as between their Life & Death demo and the Black Dawn EP, but it's a step forward. So, head over to their website and download this EP!

Black Dawn

Black Dawn
(self-released - 2009)

The Swedish foursome has an EP recorded which is available through their website (free download). They kick off with Your Time Will Come, an old school thrash tune. Guitarist and singer Jonas Blomquist's vocals are raw, he also adds some growls. The guitar play is melodic and base in traditional metal resp. thrash metal. But due to the vocals they can be labelled as thrash'n'death. Claustrophobic isn't as fast as the opener, but a riff-based rocker. Everwhere remind me even more of Children Of Bodom now, but they are closer to thrash metal - and have no keyboards. Lately the Finnish haven't had the catchiness they had on Hatecrew Deathroll, and a good hook wouldn't hurt Everwhere... At Awake its obvious that the songs need time to grow, coz after a few spins the guitar melodies sneak into your brain. The title track Black Dawn shows them a bit different... Based on a more complex drum beat and the heavy riffing more traditional metal - on top the growls of Jonas. The song ends with a longer instrumental passage. The closer is called Two-Faced - and they speed up again. The song is also a two-faced track, why? Listen to it!
Still the guitar play is a strong point of Everwhere, the vocals are still their weak spot, but the raw style fits to the songs - even if personally I would like to have some more melodic parts... Just to add some variety. Fans of Norther, Children Of Bodom and thrash'n'death bands in general should go to the bands website and download the EP. Its for free, so there is no excuse not to check out the Swedish!

Life and Death

Life & Death
(self-released - 2008)

Very heavy the Swedish foursome starts into the demo with the title track Life & Death. Then they stop dead, restart... repeating this before they speed up and head into a thrashy rocker with a heavy groove and fat riffs. In my opinion their weak spot are the vocals of Jonas Blomquist, but this is a demo and when you look at the biography it took the 2 founding members quite awhile to complete the line-up... The lead guitar part is adding a different vibe, but it somehow fits. Then they slow down and they tend a bit towards doom... Another heavy rocker is What It Means, but somehow this one is different... A bit 80's metal influenced... And the vocals have a slight punk attitude. And it becomes obvious that Jonas Blomquist is a better guitarist then singer, but I think with experience he can improve the later. The fat riffing is a kind of trademark for Everwhere which shows Hit The Bricks, again the song has an 80's touch, but they add something new... Well, not new.... If you can imagine a rock song with a dash of old Metallica or Megadeth, then you get a slight idea about their sound. But there is more into their sound! You can find some unusual drum patterns, punky vocals and cool melodic lead guitar parts. The last track is called Don't Give Up, and gets mainly through the vocals a punky touch while musically you can find some progressive elements and structures.
I think the guys are on a good way, but the songs should vary a bit more - but that's a matter of taste... I can imagine that live this is fun, but off stage I would wish the vocals would be.... different. But well, you can check the Swedish out for free, download the demo from their website or in case you are interested in some more free music, go to Free Metal Albums!
