Brass Tactics
(Good To Die Records - 2012)

Dog Shredder is an experimental rock band from the US, the trio was founded in 2008 and in 2010 they released their first EP called Boss Rhino. Now they are back with Brass Tactics, a 3-track EP. All titles start with 'battle', the opener is Battle Toads, a 70's-tinged rocker with some chaotic parts. Josh Holland and the guys seems to be influenced by prog rock of the 70's and here they mix it with a dash of math rock - at least that's how it sounds to me. Battle Snake is starting chaotic, but then take you back to the jam sounds of the 60's / 70's, something we aren't used to nowadays. Technically on a high level, but far from easy listening! Sound-wise they also take you back in time, the tracks sound like being recorded in the 70's - just the warm analog sound is missing. At Battle 07 Dog Shredder sound like they have recorded this 30 years ago live in their rehearsal room - and so it's a challenge to everybody who is used to the polished sound of this millennium.

Fans of math rock might not like the 70's sound, and fans of 70's rock will find Dog Shredder too experimental. They will find their audience, but it won't appeal the masses!

When you get a record produced in a studio you are supposed to get an acceptable sound quality, but that is not what Dog Shredder have been blessed with. This small 3-song EP is badly mixed, too much drums and the vocals are recorded at a very low volume. The music itself is confusing with no ideas or control, and mostly reminds listeners of a training session in the rehearsal room. All 3 songs, Battle Toads, Battle Snake, and Battle 07 are created over the same frame with fast galloping noise where the control gets lost in the performing efforts. In my view it does more damage than good to release music when it's of such a low quality as Dog Shredder provides. Better luck next time.
