From The Vault

From The Vault
(Phoenix Records - 2011)

Doc Holliday was founded in 1980 and they see themselves as part of the second generation of Southern rock. Their self-titled debut hit the charts in 1981 and through the years they played countless shows and released albums more or less frequently. Now they celebrate their 30th anniversary and say farewell. At the moment they do their last tour and with From The Vault they present a special album incl. cover versions, outtakes and live versions. Additionally they present a new song.

They open with 2 tracks from their 1982 album Rides Again, and I bet that every Southern rock fan knows the opener Last Ride. With Drowning In The Sea Of Love they present an outtake from their debut album and one wonders why this one didn't made it onto the album. After a tune off Danger Zone it's time for All The Right Moves, another track from 1986, but obviously an attempt to hit the charts - incl. a stadium rock chorus.

Next in line 2 live versions recorded in Finland. As it's cover versions of Sweet Home Alabama and Johnny B Goode, you hear a female radio (?) host - sorry I don't know Finnish, so no idea what she's taking about - who takes for a sec to one of the guys before they return to the stage for the encores. Metal fans will think of Judas Priest's version of Johnny B Goode, but this a Southern rock version by the Georgia boys - and I really like the Doc Holliday version.

Son Of The Morning Star is the title track of their 1993 album, but this is an alternate version which was re-arranged and recorded in 1996. With the newly arranged version of Lonesome Guitar (recorded in 1986) they present a song their songs know very well, just this is a different version. This time they present it acoustically!

With Good Time Music they offer an alternate mix of The Lovin' Spoonful classic which they recorded for the same titled album. With Glendale Train they have a traditional recorded which is a real treat for the fans. No idea when this was recorded, I only know it's a radio live recording for 92.7 Radio.

Last but not least the only new song - Can't Live Without You. The boogie-based Southern rock tune shows that they still can write good songs and documents that this band is still creative and knows how to rock. A pity they call it quits. Let's hope that sooner or later they will come back - like so many others did - and then say 'we can't live without you'. Doc Holliday kept Southern rock alive and with this album they close the chapter. Sure, one can complain about the chosen tracks, the versions... But I recommend to enjoy this album, even if it stands for the end of a band. Thanks to Doc Holliday for 30 years of Southern rock!

A Better Road

A Better Road
(Halycon Music - 2001)

The quintet kicks off the album with the Thin Lizzy cover Jailbreak which they present in a real heavy version and I guess Mr. Lynott would like this version... On this album you can find 5 brand-new songs, partly previously unreleased tracks from their most successful time in the early 80's. Beside that the band of singer Bruce Brookeshire remastered 5 classics from the history of the Southern rockers. They partly re-recorded the instrumental parts and so they sound fresh. On of the first highlights on the album is the track Faith In You, a very emotional mid-tempo track with a heavy guitar riff, but the voice of Bruce Brookeshire make this magic.

The title track is an acoustic track which reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd's All I Can Do Is Write About It... On Angels In Waiting mainman Bruce Brookeshire was joined for song writing by lead guitarist John T. Samuelson. The song is a mid-tempo ballad which slowly sneaks into your brain and keeps spinning there.

I can resume that this album is interested for fans of the band as well as for people who want to check out the music of Doc Holliday.
