Christmas Songs

Christmas Songs
(Steamhammer - 2004)

With Blackmore's Night guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and singer Candice Night go more into the folk rock genre. With this EP they present 3 Christmas songs in an semi-acoustic version. Her beautiful clear voice is dominating the songs and carries you away. With Christmas Eve they kick off. Many Christmas songs are quite bombastic, but here the beauty lies in the reduction. Emanuel starts with acoustic guitar and Candice Night's vocals are soothing... Enchanting. The last track is We Three Kings - a famous American Christmas carol. And again it's the simpleness which is enchanting.
Many Christmas songs are bombastic and kitschy and so it's nice to hear this enchanting (semi-)acoustic songs. I really wish they do a full album for next Christmas!

Beyond The Sunset - The Romantic Collection

Beyond The Sunset - The Romantic Collection
(Steamhammer - 2004)

Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore is known for his work with Deep Purple and later Rainbow. A few years ago Mr. Blackmore discovered his love for mediaeval music. He almost gave up the electric guitar to work mainly acoustic. With his wife Candice Night he released 4 albums under the logo of Blackmore's Night. This is a collection of romantic love songs which could be the soundtrack for a wedding. One of the 14 tracks is the previously unreleased Once In A Million Years. Tracks like Wish You Were Here, Be Mine Tonight, I Still Remember and Diamonds And Rust show the romantic, balladesque side of Blackmore's Night. Nothing for die-hard metalheads, coz here are no electric guitars can be heard. But perfect for some romantic moments.
The limited edition comes with a 2nd CD which included 5 video tracks live recorded at a show in Solingen (Germany) and some Christmas tracks... Well, the video tracks are cool, but when I want to listen to some different kind of Christmas music, then I prefer Trans-Siberian Orchestra's albums.
The rest of it can be categorized as romantic mediaeval pop music.

Past Times With Good Company

Past Times With Good Company
(Steamhammer - 2002)

Is Christmas around the corner again?!? Ritchie Blackmore doesn't care. The man who become famous all around the world with Deep Purple and Rainbow is now also known as a solo artist. In the beginning this was just planned as a kind of project, an experiment and so after the release of 3 studio albums it was time to do a live album!
Again Mr. Blackmore presents music which lives from the folk elements taken from the 16th century, he and his mates offer 15 tracks including a Rainbow and a Deep Purple tune. Ritchie and his partner Candice Night celebrate melancholy music arrangements with a lot acoustic parts.
Calming music which is marked by Blackmore's guitar and the vocals of Candice Night. A nice piece of music... Btw, it's a double CD.
