We Are The Brokenhearted

We Are The Brokenhearted
(Frontiers Records - 2011)

Beggars & Thieves was founded in the 80's and their self-titled debut stirred up the scene - not just in their home town New York. But then grunge got big and had an effect on the band's career. In the 90's they released 2 more albums, but due to the trend of the time they didn't get much attention, but finally they released another album in 2010 - Stand Alone. And even if the band has been through changes the main men are still in B&T and now it's time for We Are The Brokenhearted.

The new album kicks off with We Come Undone, a riff-based rocker and a catchy one, too. The warm sound reminds me of old analog recordings - and I love it. The warm, emotional vocals of Louie Merlino are enchanting, fans of hard rock and AOR should easily fall for this one! They slow down for Oil And Water, the melancholy rock tune shows a different facet of Beggars & Thieves. Innocence is a true 80's rocker with big backings and a dash of hair metal. It's the expressive vocals and great guitar play which will hook you up, every tune is touching you. The singing guitar at Beautiful Losers is just beautiful and definitely no loser. ;)

Stranded is another ear catcher, something you soon start singing along the refrain or humming it. One of my favorites is Midnight Blue, an up-tempo rocker. They close this chapter with the title track - We Are The Brokenhearted. The song has a lot of late 80's elements and a few dashes of Bruce Springsteen in it.

Only Wash Away isn't really get me hooked up, but well 9 out of 10 isn't bad, right? Okay, some will say the album lacks variety, and that's what I say pretty often, but in this case you won't hear me saying it! Sure, the songs are much alike, but all full of emotions and I think if they would go for variety the touching effect would have get lost. So thanks for sticking what you are best at! Hope for more!
