Entrenched In The Faults Of The Earth

Entrenched In The Faults Of The Earth
(self-released - 2018)

Barren Altar are a blackened funeral doom band from California which started back in 2013. This is their debut which is released now. The album has just 5 tracks, but most tracks are 7+ minutes long. Just one short track can be found on this disk. The CD is limited to 300 copies, beside that you can download the album at the official Bandcamp site.

They kick off with Nexus Of Grief, a doomy riff-based tune with up-tempo parts and blackish screams by R. who later add some growls. Then a break leads into a simple, reduced passage which is unsettling. The short Submerged is taking you into a different soundscape, it's like you are drowning in darkness... It's kinda peaceful. The eerie, but peaceful feeling continues with Call To The Waves. At least for awhile it stays that way, then it explodes into an up-tempo black metal onslaught full of hate - before going doomy. It's a roller coaster ride between depressive and hateful parts. This is mean!

The Great Awakening Of Death is offering melodic elements embedded in furious black metal sounds, but don't expect too much! They spice up their tunes with some melodic guitar passages, just to destroy you a moment later with viscous sounds. The closer Delirium Vivens is same, but different.
