Sic Transit Gloria Mundi is a Latin phrase meaning 'Thus Passes the Glory of the World'. It is an apt title for Necrite's first full-length album as contained within this record is approximately 70 minutes of dark music that sucks all color from the world leaving a grey, forlorn place full of only suffering and anguish.
The California-based band play a mix of ambient, drone and utterly depressive black metal. Believe me, this album is not for the faint of heart! Five songs are included, none of which are below the seven minute mark. The title track itself stretches to a monstrous twenty seven minutes!
Its no secret that this style of music is not really to my taste. However, I've heard enough bands in this genre to know when it is being done well and Necrite are extremely good at what they do! The atmosphere is so oppressive and so completely devoid of joy that I felt my life slipping from me with every note. I had to constantly check my pulse to make sure I hadn't actually passed over to the other side!
The final track on the album is Worship The Sunn (((O))), a tribute to the famous drone band. Its a little out of place being a straightforward drone song with none of the black metal elements that Necrite have displayed in the previous songs. As a tribute to Sunn (((O))) it works but as part of the album, probably not.
If you're not into depressive music this album isn't going to convert you but if you're a fan of this form of music you will love this album. Its an exceptionally dark opus in which the mood is only ruined by the final song.
