Another project from Danish guitarist Niels Vejlyt. Not a real band, but one mans music with help from guest musicians. There is always a risk that these albums do not turn out very good. A small CD with 9 songs, all made by Niels Vejlyt, but maybe he don't put his heart and thoughts into the project, because it has a tendency of getting messy from time to time.
Different impressions the songs gives to say the least.
First we get The Hunger: great guitar from Vejlyt, soft voices from new female singer Kimmie Tenna Nielsen, but without real bite. And a big fault to change the these in the middle of the song.
On the song The Stand we get the same changing of rhythm once again, slow voices, there are a few seconds of interesting choruses, but it is absolutely not enough.
Angels is a soft ballad with good songwriting, but unfortunately it is so slow that it's loosing the listeners on the floor.
Evernight makes the same guitar intro as all the songs, added good drum work, soft singing but suddenly Niels Vejlyt introduces death metal growling, almost animal-like, from death metaller Simon Holm. That is totally unnecessary.
Secrets is a song with good ideas, super voices, but the guitar solos in the later part of the song is almost ruining the whole song.
Back From The Past is a nice duet, a fine ballad with lovely background play.
Smoke And Mirrors sums up the whole album. Experimenting guitar sound and ballad together in the same song, but the soft voices from Kimmie Nielsen and animal growling from Simon Holm does not mix at all together.
The Infinite Overture Pt. 1 is a piano-based ballad with good drums once again. Full of well-modulated ideas but never really makes the impact on the listeners.
Darkness Of Mind finishes the album with a piano and singing performance, it is nice and sweet but again too much of a mix.
Generally it mostly sounds like it is Niels Vejlyt's album, but if the musicians are performing their own ideas, and all at the same time. It could have been a good album, but too much dominated by Vejlyt's guitar so it threatens to scare people away instead of listening to the album.
