But We Try It is a young band from Germany, they now present their debut Dead Lights via Massacre Records. The band was founded in 2008 and in 2009 they released a demo EP.
The quintet kicks off with a melodic guitar passage, then they storm off. The song offers fat riffs, a heavy groove, aggressive shouts and mean growls peppered up with breaks. Cruel World follows and they stick to their sound, well, they haven't developed their own sound yet. They are heavily influenced by the Gothenburg scene. The melodic lead guitar parts stick out, but they aren't very memorable. At Everything Falls Apart they show reminiscences to old-school thrash for a moment, but also offer a doomy part. Personally I find Jörn Preidt's vocals tiring and a bit one-dimensional, even if he switches between shouts and growls. It's the guitar play which make you listen, e.g. the melodic leads at the opening passage of Remember Me. At The Great Disaster they are more melodic and only Preidt's vocals give the song an aggressive edge. The two parts of Dead Lights are also more melodic - incl. a piano passage at the end of the second part - and with different vocals would easily attract fans of power metal too. Fans of metalcore are probably not to happy with the album as well, but I can just recommend to head over to their MySpace and check them out yourself.
